Re-Engineering to Rescue Damaged Lungs
Re-Engineering to Rescue Damaged Lungs Re-Engineering to Rescue Damaged Lungs Re-Engineering to Rescue Damaged Lungs Inspired by the critical need for more donated lungs until a time when organs hopefully may be 3D bioprinted, a Columbia University team of bioengineers and physicians has been working for the past five years on alternative approaches, particularly rescuing damaged donor lungs that have been rejected. We have done a lot of workand research, from basic biology to engineering, clinical science, and also small animal studies, says Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic, Mikati Foundation Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences at Columbia Engineering. She leads a multidisciplinary team that includes, among others, Matthew Bacchetta, associate prof of surgery at Columbia University Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian.During that time, team members began understanding how to keep the lung functioning outside the body, how to remove cells, how to measure functional pa rameters, how to use stem cells in the right format to deliver them to the lung, and much more. Among techniques they developed for improving lungs welches replacing defective cells with new therapeutic cells from the transplant recipient as a means of helping prevent rejection. Then we came to a bigger challenge a little over a year ago, Vunjak-Novakovic recalls. No matter what they tried, they couldnt get the lung to maintain its function longer than approximately six hours. That didnt allow enough time for newly developed reconditioning techniques to do their jobs. If the time frame could be extended, they believed that they could bring to an acceptable level a good number of the four out of five lungs evaluated but rejected at transplant centers due to the decline in quality during transport.Photographic, radiographic and thermographic images of injured lungs recovered with extracorporeal cross-circulation. Image Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic / Columbia UniversityYou supply the lung w ith everything it needs the oxygen, the blood flow, et cetera, but then the question we kept asking ourselves was Whats missing? she says. The team then realized that it was the systemic component that was missing. That became the basis for an approach that resulted in a first and a breakthrough maintaining a fully functional lung outside the body for several days. The team drew on an abandoned surgical procedure called cross-circulation, used during the early days of open heart surgeries to exchange blood flow between two patients and reconfigured it, developing a radically new technology. The procedure enables long-term support of living organs outside the body by providing critical systemic and metabolic factors that were missing. Then there were other challenges to keep the lungs viable since the time outside the body was going to be for a longer period than ever before. They designed a temperature-controlled humidification system and a recirculating warm-water organ basin to prev ent the lungs outer surface from drying out and provide normal body temperature. The team also needed to engineer new devices and components to allow for adequate blood flow into and out of the lungs during cross-circulation. They engineered a dynamic system capable of height and hydrostatic pressure adjustments and feedback-regulated pressure-controlled flow. They also developed techniques to precisely target drugs and cells to where they wanted them eliminating repeated lung biopsies.Recently appointed the first professor from Columbia Engineering to the rank of University Professor, Columbia Universitys highest academic honor, Vunjak-Novakovic said this is the most complex study her team has ever done and also one of the most exciting because it has the highest potential for clinical translation - and soon. There were a lot of different aspects that you have to work out and had to all come together. Its a very complex process, but she says in the short time from when the study was started about 18 months ago until the publishing of the latest results on Nature Biomedical Engineerings website in March, everything worked. From day one, from the very first experiment, things worked and in a very robust and reproducible way, Vunjak-Novakovic says. This makes us particularly happy. We believe the technology will be transferred to many users without too many problems because of that. She says high-level cooperation among the members of the integrated engineering-surgical team has been critical and continues as they move forward. The next step is clinical. We want to come soon to the point where we can repair lungs that can be offered to patients soon. Its a real crisis, she says. According to Donate Life America, More than 1,400 adults and children in the U.S. are waiting for new lungs. The teams most immediate goal is to increase the number of acceptable lungs for transplant in patients with acute lung injury, the specific condition the team studied, by bringing the rejected lungs to an acceptable level and also by conditioning them so they will transplant better and reduce the immune burden.Another immediate goal, already being worked on, is extending the approach to other indications, such as chronically damaged lungs by disease, and also to other organs, such as the liver and kidneys. This is a phenomenal opportunity to do something practical to move this technology into clinical practice. Its not going to happen tomorrow. But it is one of these projects where you can plainly see that it may happen quickly, Vunjak-Novakovic says. An exact time is difficult to pinpoint, but its not years and years. We will know much more in six months or so when we finish some ongoing studies, she says.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. This is a phenomenal opportunity to do something practical to move this technology into clinical practice. Prof. Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic, Columbia University

Bad Day at Work At Least You Didnt Blow Up Two F-16s Like This Guy
Bad Day at Work At Least You Didnât Blow Up Two F-16s Like This Guy Bad Day at Work At Least You Didnât Blow Up Two F-16s Like This Guy On the morning of 11th October, a certain aircraft technician in Belgium was about to have a REALLY bad day a work. A day filled with drama, machine gun fire and explosions. A day at the end of which two F-16 fighters worth over $30,000,000 would lie in ashes. Souce: Scramble Magazine Routine maintenance gone terribly wrong. The technician was working on an F-16 fighter at Florennes Air Base in Belgium. Nothing special, just a routine maintenance. But then, somehow, he accidentally triggered the six-barrels 20mm Vulcan cannon of that F-16. Unfortunately, the cannon was loaded. And some of the bullets, each of them almost the size of a small beer bottle, hit another F-16 standing nearby. Source: Reddit This alone would be quite a disaster. But to make things even worse, the second F-16 has just been refueled. As you probably suspect, nothing good can arise from the combination of 20mm bullets and jet fuel. Unsurprisingly, the second F-16 exploded and damaged a third F-16. Source: Scramble Magazine An accident with a happy ending? It could have been worse. Ultimately, neither of the nearby technicians got seriously injured. They only suffered minor hearing damage but received medical attention on the spot. Regarding the damaged planes, Belgiumâs Ministry of Defense issued a short statement confirming one plane was destroyed, while other suffered collateral damage. In the end, the Belgian Air Force has been left with 60 active F-16 aircraft remaining. And we think that 60 is a nice round number, much nicer than 62. Itâs just a shame that each of the damaged jets normally costs around $15 million. We can only hope that Belgiums government wonât ask the poor guy to pay for all the damage he caused. Advantages of Working in a Large Law Firm
Advantages of Working in a Large Law Firm Advantages of Working in a Large Law Firm Less than a quarter of all attorneys in private practice are employed by large law firms- those with over 20 lawyers, according to the American Bar Association. These law firms are sometimes known as mega-firms or Big Law, and there may be a good reason why so few lawyers get to join their ranks. Application to these firms is highly competitive. Employment in a large law firm has unique benefits that set it apart from other practice environments, from areas of salaries to advancement potential. But there are challenges as well. 01 High SalariesLarge law firms rank among the highest paid practice environments for legal professionals. Employees are often granted more generous compensation packages than those working in the government, judiciary, small firm, non-profit, or public interest sectors. Unpaid interns are almost unheard of, unlike in smaller firms. These firms can afford to pay well because they typically attract major, moneyed clients. 02 Well-Credentialed ColleaguesBecause many large law firms are willing to pay top dollar, they can recruit the most well-qualified lawyers, paralegals, and staff. Mega-firms often recruit only the top students from the most prestigious law schools. Paralegals in large law firms generally have bachelorâs degrees as well as experience in their legal specialty. 03 Sophisticated, Challenging WorkMuch of the high-end, complex litigation and transactional legal work goes to large law firms because they boast high-caliber talent and a broad range of resources. And high-end, complex legal work in a broad range of practice areas provides an intellectually challenging environment for law firm attorneys and paralegals. These are firms that attract high profile class action suits that require strong, large staffs to manage and try in court. Of course, the downside to this can be very long workdays and virtually nonexistent days off. 04 Large, Diverse Client BasesThe clients of large law firms tend to be more plentiful and diverse than those of smaller firms. A large, diversified client base makes it less likely that the firm will encounter financial difficulty if a client takes its business elsewhere. Many of the mega-firms have multi-jurisdictional practices and multiple locations across the globe, allowing lawyers and paralegals to serve international clients. 05 Extensive Firm ResourcesLarge law firms have more on-site resources than smaller firms. Large firm resources range from full-service copy centers and extensive law libraries to in-house gyms and full-service cafeterias.A large law firm has extensive administrative and support staff at its disposal as well. Staff can include legal administrators, legal secretaries, paralegals, marketing specialists, IT personnel, file clerks, librarians, court filers, and messengers. 06 Luxurious Offices in Prime LocationsLarge law firm offices tend to offer more plush and spacious surroundings than small firms, public interest firms, and the government. Large law firm offices are generally located in prime areas of town, close to the courthouse, with fine dining and other amenities nearby to woo clients and recruits. Of course, luxurious offices usually require a certain dress code, even on weekends and holidays. 07 Well-Developed Training ProgramsLarge law firms often establish well-defined training and mentoring programs for associates, paralegals, and other law firm professionals. Many also have elaborate summer associate programs and in-house educational programs that provide continued growth and learning opportunities for employees. Many large law firms create diversity initiatives to promote the success of women and minority attorneys and to encourage equal opportunity. 08 Significant Advancement OpportunitiesMany large law firms are based on complex organizational hierarchies, creating more opportunities for promotion. For example, the career path of a lawyer in a large firm might progress from entry-level/junior associate to mid-level associate, to senior associate, to non-equity partner, then to equity partner, and finally to senior partner. 09 Pro Bono InitiativesLarge law firms frequently establish pro bono and public service programs that encourage lawyers and paralegals to commit a certain number of hours to helping the community and under-served populations, such as children and the elderly. This can be helpful because many bar associations require ongoing pro bono participation for membership. Don't Overlook Name Recognition Working for a top-name law firm that's well-recognized and highly regarded in the legal community affords a certain level of status and prestige. If you ever do decide to move on, it will look very good on your resume.

Understanding Forensic Science and Careers in the Field
Understanding Forensic Science and Careers in the Field Understanding Forensic Science and Careers in the Field The Latin word forensis means public discussion or debate. When you combine forensics and science, you get the practical application of science to matters of debate, which in modern times translates to the law. Forensic Science and the Law Forensic science can prove the guilt or innocence of a defendant in criminal law, and it can help resolve a broad spectrum of legal issues in civil actions through the identification, analysis, and evaluation of physical and other evidence. But an accurate forensic science definition extends beyond the traditional concept of science. It can include the areas of accounting, psychological testing, and interpretation of data and other evidence. In the scientific sphere, forensics can include DNA analysis, fingerprinting, autopsies, pathology, and toxicology, all of which can be used to determine the cause of death and to link a suspect to a crime. Forensic scientists and law enforcement officials use cutting-edge scientific techniques to preserve and examine evidence in a process known as chain of evidence. This process ensures that evidence is pure and has not had an opportunity to become tainted through mishandling. Keeping meticulous records allows forensic scientists to show exactly who was in possession of evidence at any given time and when and how transfers of the evidence were made. Forensic science can also involve an analysis of electronic or digital media - think wiretaps and recovering erased information from computer hard drives. It might mean an exhaustive reconstruction of business or financial records to track sources of hidden income or expenses, or psychological profiles and evaluations of those involved in crimes or a lawsuit. What a Forensic Scientist Does A forensic scientist is typically charged with much more than just digging into the facts of a case and substantiating or disproving them based on an interpretation of the evidence. Strong record-keeping skills are crucial because they will often be called upon to testify to their findings in court. Such scientists are typically required to submit written reports to the court and opposing counsel as well, detailing the nature of their findings and testimony before trial. These reports can be extensive and complex. Forensic scientists must be able to demonstrate how they arrived at their conclusions. A forensic scientist often serves as an expert witness at a trial. They arent a party to the incident that gave rise to the lawsuit or criminal trial and they cant testify to the facts of the case. Rather they testify to their interpretation of them. They have the training and credentials to pose an opinion regarding various aspects of the case. The opposing party reserves the right to cross-examine and challenge the forensic scientists findings. One challenge might be that the scientist might have processed physical evidence incorrectly. Types of Forensic Science Jobs Forensic science includes a good many general jobs, but positions in this field also cover a broad spectrum of specialties. You can pretty much match any one of them to your area of interest and expertise. Blood Spatter Analyst A blood spatter analyst is charged with analyzing blood samples both at the scene of a crime and in the lab. This type of analyst can also work with trace evidence. Document Examiners Think issues of handwriting analysis here. Document examiner positions can also involve detection of altered images and print copies. Forensic Anthropologists Similar to medical examiners, forensic anthropologists deal with human remains to derive information such as the age or race of a victim. In fact, they typically work under the supervision of a medical examiner. Theyre less likely to work with recent corpses than bones and other remains, however. Medical Examiner The position of medical examiner pays very well but it also requires a good bit of schooling - you must have a medical degree in addition to a four-year degree and additionally complete a residency. This position involves conducting autopsies and determining a cause of death. Forensics Technicians Forensics technicians are often employed in the field to collect evidence in such a way as to preserve the chain of evidence. Forensic Accounting Another less scientific area that you might want to explore is forensic accounting. If secrets hidden in numbers intrigue you, this position involves digging for evidence in financial records. Forensic Engineering Forensic engineering might be for you if structures and their anomalies are what get your blood pumping. Forensic Artists Many detectives and investigators do double duty to accommodate this role, but some larger law enforcement agencies have artists on staff. They can create composites based on witness testimony as well as age progression images and other visual aids for trial. Laboratory Analyst The range of evidence handled by a laboratory analyst can be more complex, stretching to collecting DNA evidence and performing analyses of weapons as well. Toxicologists Toxicologists investigate blood and tissue samples for substances such as alcohol, drugs, or even poisoning. Both laboratory analysts and toxicologists typically operate out of labs, as do fingerprint analysts and ballistics analysts, who work with solely with firearm evidence. Educational Requirements A career in one of these sciences generally requires at least one four-year college degree in one of the natural sciences, most commonly in the forensics field that you wish to pursue, but there are exceptions. An accounting degree is typically necessary if you want to engage in a field of financial analysis. Pathologists, on the other hand, must first earn a medical degree and doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) must additionally be certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology. You might consider a broader major like criminal justice if you havent yet pinned down your exact area of interest. A secondary degree specifically in forensics can help you get your foot in the door. And some entry-level positions might simply require former law enforcement experience - you can learn more on the job. If you have an inquiring mind and like to advocate for the truth, forensic science may be the career for you.

How to Stop Overcomplicating Things at Work - The Muse
How to Stop Overcomplicating Things at Work - The Muse How to Stop Overcomplicating Things at Work Unstoppable. Thatâs the word that jumped out at me when my colleague shared a Medium article titled, â30 Behaviors That Will Make You Unstoppable.â The article was basically just what I needed to get motivated this month. Truth be told, Iâm less of a New Yearâs resolution person and more the kind of person who seeks out new habits thatâll positively benefit myself, as well as the people around me. And thatâs why #21- choose simplicity over complication- jumped out at me. This isnât about taking the easy route or not embracing or seeking challenges; rather, itâs about not overthinking things, not overanalyzing those items that donât need to be dissected. Too often, my habit is to overcomplicate or even just complicate matters that are undeserving of that response. In the office, it may mean accepting something at face value and not asking a million and one questions every time a process changes or a new task is given. Or when it comes to my work, it might mean participating in meetings when my feedback is requested and not overthinking every single thing that was said or noted to the point where I follow up on it later that night when I'm supposed to be unwinding at home. The thing is, life is complicated enough in and of itself, and when we insist on making this true about everything we do and say, we waste valuable time and energy. We stop ourselves from moving forward. Iâm not saying that a curious mind isnât a good thing, but I am saying is that itâs important to think before speaking. To listen and digest before acting. Thatâs choosing simplicity wherever possible. And thatâs what Iâm going to embrace this year. Photo of person courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.

How to Avoid the Most Common Cover Letter Mistakes
How to Avoid the Most Common Cover Letter Mistakes How to Avoid the Most Common Cover Letter Mistakes Your cover letter is a major component of your application. In fact, its one of the first things most employers notice when evaluating candidates. An effective cover letter can prove that you write well, think clearly, and possess the qualities you need to succeed in the job. A poorly written or structured cover letter, on the other hand, can hold back your application. Most Common Cover Letter Mistakes Here are nine of the most common mistakes cover letter mistakes - avoiding them will help you jump the first job application hurdle and get screened for an interview. Submitting a Cover Letter with Errors Submitting a letter with grammar and/or spelling errors is a sure way to get screened out. Use spelling and grammar checking tools to identify some issues, but never trust that they have caught all your errors. Instead, read through your document carefully. It can help to print out a copy. Place your finger below every word, then read it out loud slowly. (This helps catch missed words or homophone mix-ups.) Its also very helpful to have friends and advisors review your communications before sending them to potential employers. Sending a Generic Letter Another common cover letter pitfall is sending the same generic letter to every employer. Writing a targeted cover letter, tailored for each job, is always a better approach. Make sure you mention the specific job for which you are applying in your first sentence. Carefully consider the characteristics of the ideal candidate, as listed in the job posting, and explain how your skills, experiences, and personal qualities will enable you to excel in that particular job. Not Getting the Facts Right It is surprising how often job seekers address their letter to the wrong person or reference the wrong company. This is often the case when candidates are applying for many jobs at the same time. Carefully check your salutation and be certain that you list the right contact person and mention only your target company throughout your letter. (And, always triple-check that the persons name and the company name are spelled correctly. Thats a particularly embarrassing error to let slip through.) Using an Outdated Greeting Refrain from using old-fashioned terms like Dear Sir or Madam if you dont have the name of a contact person. Try gender-neutral terms like Dear Human Resources Manager or another generic greeting. Address women as Ms. Jones as opposed to Mrs. Jones or simply start with the first paragraph of your letter and dont address it to anyone. Not Writing a Long Enough Letter Sending a letter that is too short can send the wrong signal to employers about your work ethic or level of interest in the job. Plus, a very brief cover letter may mean missing an opportunity to frame your background for employers and to lead them towards a positive view of your candidacy. Or Writing an Overly Long Letter While a very brief cover letter is a no-no, that doesnt mean you should write a multi-page letter. An overly lengthy letter can burden the reader and increase the likelihood that they will jump over your letter and move right to the resume. The same can be said for paragraphs that are too dense. Aim for 3 to 5 paragraphs no longer than six lines each. Including Too Much Information There is some information that you dont need to include in your cover letter. In fact, including it can hurt your chances of securing an interview. Dont give employers potentially disqualifying details. Keep the focus on your qualifications and why you are a good fit for the position at hand. Not Providing Concrete Examples Expressing empty opinions about your strengths will generally not convince employers about your suitability for the job. Back up your statements about your assets by referencing a job or role where you successfully employed that strength. For example, instead of simply stating I possess strong writing skills and an outstanding work ethic. try Strong writing skills enabled me to revise a grant proposal and secure $100,000 in additional funding from the Jones Foundation. Not Expressing Enough Interest Dont leave the hiring manager wondering about your level of interest. For hiring managers, its frustrating to find the perfect candidate only to have the person drop-out in the middle of the interview process or ultimately decline a job offer. Interviewing takes time for companies, as well as for applicants. Express a genuine enthusiasm for the job so that the employer knows that you are highly motivated to pursue the job.

How to Handle a Job Demotion
How to Handle a Job Demotion How to Handle a Job Demotion Jobs can be downgraded for many reasons. For example, employees can be demoted in order to eliminate duplication after a merger, to reorganize or streamline an organization or for poor job performance. In all cases, there is a sense of loss and a threat to self-esteem. Get Support Being demoted is painful - you can feel rejected, unwanted and unappreciated. You may need to seek support from friends, family and/or counselors outside the workplace, in order to share and address your feelings. As with any loss, it will take some time to work through these emotions before initiating a strategy to move on with your career. Should You Look for Another Job? You may need to decide whether to stay with your current employer or find another job. It can be a good idea not to make a hasty decision. You dont have anything to lose by taking the time to see if the new job will work out or if you need to move on. In either case, it will be critical to establish a record of strong performance in your new role. Dedicate the time and energy necessary to master the new job, work on rebuilding your relationship with your manager, if necessary, and develop a positive rapport with any new supervisors. If you plan to stay on with your current employer, you will need to demonstrate your commitment and alleviate any concerns that your supervisors may have about your attitude. If you decide to seek outside employment, you will be in a better position to receive a positive recommendation from your new supervisors if your performance is above average and you handle the demotion gracefully. When You Decide to Move On Heres what to do if you decide that staying isnt going to work out, and you need to find another job: Dont quit. Dont just resign from your job. If you do, you may not be eligible for unemployment. Heres information on eligibility for unemployment when you quit. Its easier to find a job when you have a job, so keep that in mind as well. Strategically plan your departure, so its on your terms. Be careful. Keep your job search confidential and dont mention that youre job searching to anyone at work, especially your boss. You dont want to end up getting fired because of your job hunting activities. Initiate networking activities with professionals in your field through professional organizations. Attend meetings and conferences, and volunteer for committees to raise your profile. Heres how to use career networking to help with your job search. Reach out to friends, neighbors and family to ask for referrals to professionals in your field for informational consultations. Be prepared to explain your demotion. You may opt to explain your position change in your resume or cover letter, but youre not required to. You dont want to knock yourself out of contention for a job because you shared too much information. Create or enhance your LinkedIn profile, join LinkedIn groups for your career field and college and reach out to contacts for informational interviews. Be careful about what your manager and colleagues can see that youre doing on LinkedIn. Update your resume, work on some cover letters for target jobs and have your documents critiqued. If youre a college graduate, tap the resources, services and job listings offered by your alma mater. Otherwise, check out how to find free or low-cost job search help. Attend social and professional networking events and job fairs. Have an elevator pitch ready to share with networking contacts and recruiters. Consider having a business card printed with your contact information. Plan Your Transition Do keep in mind that laying the groundwork for your transition to a new job will likely take some time. Patience will be critical so that you dont tip your hand prematurely, and create concerns with your current employer. How to Explain a Demotion in a Job Interview You should be prepared for your potential employer to ask about the demotion during your interview. While this doesnt have to be a deal breaker for the position, you should try to frame that transition in the least damaging way possible. Remember that your interview is your opportunity to highlight your strengths. While you will need to address the demotion when you are asked about it, there is no reason to dwell on it. Do your research on the company and the position, and be prepared to discuss your relevant skills and experiences. You are there to present yourself as the best possible candidate for the job, and while you should have a plausible, truthful answer to this tough question prepared, there is no reason to elaborate any further than necessary. The Best Way to Answer Interview Questions About a Demotion If your demotion was in the past and you have now moved on to a higher level job, you can emphasize what you have learned and accomplished since the demotion, and how it qualifies you for a higher level job. Perhaps you identified a weakness and took steps like courses or workshops to strengthen that area. Your task will be more challenging if you are currently in a job which represents a step-down. You should emphasize the skills you have applied and the positive results which you have generated in your current role. If there were circumstances beyond your control, like a restructuring which reduced the number of management positions, then you can explain those factors, but donât make excuses for your shortcomings, or blame the company. Dont Criticize the Company Regardless of which angle youre coming from, be careful not to criticize management in any way. If you have identified any issues in your skill set or performance which led to your demotion and taken concrete, documented steps to address those issues, you might include some of that information. For example, if a previous job required you to create reports in Excel and you were demoted because you werent able to do so, but now have taken online courses and mastered Excel, then you might reference that development. Put Your Best Foot Forward A preemptive way to defuse any concern about a demotion is to acquire a reference from a boss or colleague at that organization which clearly affirms the value you have added as an employee. You can also start the spin in a positive direction by framing the issue in your cover letter or resume, so you have a foundation which you can elaborate on during the interview. 3 Job Interview Mistakes, As Seen in the Movie San Andreas
3 Job Interview Mistakes, As Seen in the Movie San Andreas 3 Job Interview Mistakes, As Seen in the Movie San Andreas 2Ahhh, San Andreas. Itâs what youâd expect a natural disaster summer blockbuster film to be, full of destruction, devastation, awesome CGI effects- and Dwayne Johnsonâs (aka The Rock) bulging muscles and overarching eyebrow. What you donât expect, though, are the multiple job interview mistakes shown in this movie. San Andreas provides several lessons in how not to handle a job interview. But thatâs just what you get from San Andreas. Job interview mistakes at every turn. 3 Job Interview Mistakes, As Seen in the Movie San Andreas Early on in the film, the audience is introduced to Ben (played by Hugo Johnstone-Burt). Heâs on a job interview at the company owned by mega developer Daniel Riddick (Ioan Gruffudd). He meets Blake (Alexandra Daddario), who happens to not only be Rayâs (Dwayne Johnson) daughter, but also the daughter of Emma (Carla Gugino). Ray and Emma are on the brink of divorce, and Emma has (sort of) moved on, and is now dating Daniel. It doesnât take long once the characters are established for the earth to start shaking- but not before job seeker Ben makes some catastrophic job interview mistakes of his own. Here are just three of his biggest goofs. He brings his brother on the job interview. Ben and his kid brother Ollie are from England, and taking a vacation in the States while Ben also has his job interview. But instead of leaving his brother back at the hotel or with a hired sitter, he brings him along on the interview. Bringing another person along on a job interview is one of those really big job interview mistakes that should be avoided at all costs (even if you do have a fabulous English accent), because you might be perceived by a hiring manager as not taking your interview seriously. Also, with Ollie chatting up the beautiful Blake, Ben becomes distracted and not focused on having a strong interview. And while Ben and Ollie are just brothers, if you bring along, say, your child during a job interview, a prospective boss might get the idea that you donât have adequate child-care coverage for your kid- and pass you over for the job. He doesnât know what he wants. While waiting to be called in for the job interview, Ben and Blake start a casual conversation as they get to know each other. When Blake asks Ben what kind of position heâs interviewing for, he responds with, âI donât know. Iâm neither picky nor proud.â This can be the kiss of death during a job interview. After all, when youâre going in for a job, you should know exactly what type of job you want, and be prepared with all of the reasons why your previous work experiences, job skills, and personality are perfectly suited for this position. If you were to say this to a potential employer, not only does it show that youâre a) desperate, but b) you donât really care what type of work you do. Employers want people who are going to be passionate about their jobs, because itâs then that they will be productive and loyal workers. Not knowing what you want in a job is a job interview mistake that can be easily avoided with a little preparation. He gets personal. Itâs obvious from the moment they meet that Blake and Ben like each other and will be the obligatory love story line in the midst of chaos and despair. But letâs remember that Blake is the daughter of the girlfriend of the big boss. By letting his feelings show, Ben is definitely crossing the line between professional and personal. While forming a bond with Blake ultimately winds up in his favor (spoiler: he survives in the film!), he wouldnât fair as well if this were a real job interview. It goes without saying that if youâre attracted to the person youâre interviewing with, you should keep your feelings to yourself, for fear that it could ruin your chances of getting hired for the job. And office romances (even those that are done via home offices!) rarely last, anyway. Job interview mistakes involving romance rarely work out well in real life. When youâre looking for a job, you can find inspiration anywhere- even in a movie about massive earthquakes taking out most of California. So learn from the job interview mistakes of others as a way to improve your own job interviewing skills- and learn what to do (and not to do) during a job interview. Readers, have you seen San Andreas? Have you made any of the job interview mistakes that Ben made? Let us know in the comments below!

Why people resist career change so fiercely
Why people resist career change so fiercely Why people resist career change so fiercely In developing career growth courses and programs for professional women, Iâve spent a great deal of time in the past 10 years exploring and researching why itâs so hard for many people to build- and maintain - a joyful, successful and fulfilling career, and why itâs so challenging to shift out of one career into another, to a more fulfilling path.Speaking from my own personal experience (a true breakdown/breakthrough journey), I faced several very huge obstacles that kept me from realizing with clarity and confidence that I wanted out of my corporate marketing career, and from taking the right type of forward-moving action to get out. It took so long for me to âfind braveâ that I wasted over 15 years in a corporate life that wasnât right for me.My personal blocks were: Time â" I had invested so much time in building a marketing career that it seemed ludicrous and foolish to âthrow it all away.â Ego â" My ego told me that I had worked so hard to achieve a powerful position in the corporate hierarchy (in my last corporate position, I was a Vice President) that I didnât want to step back and be a âbeginnerâ again and lose so much ground. Confusion â" If I were to chuck this professional identity, what would I do instead? Despite years of trying to answer this question, I couldnât figure it out. Sure, I fantasized about being in the film industry or doing something exciting and glamorous â" but what did I really want to do? What would I do if I won the lottery? I just couldnât uncover a new path that made sense to me. Money â" I earned a lot, and believed I needed every cent of that to provide myself and my family the living we needed and wanted. Going against the pack â" There were a good number of people in my life whom I feared would be unhappy (or worse) if I made a big shift out of my lucrative career. I realize now that most people in our lives want us to do the safe, reasonable and secure thing. They donât want us to suffer, or to lose everything. So they tell us â" strongly and loudly â" to play it safe. The unknown â" finally, I didnât want to change because I desperately wanted what I had created (the familiar path) to work out for me, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Truthfully, I was scared to death to leap into the unknown. Now, 16 years into my career reinvention (I engaged in two career transformations, in fact - from corporate VP to therapist, then to career coach/speaker/writer), I see things so very differently. I can say that none of the reasons above are sufficient to keep you stuck in a career and life you dislike intensely. But the only way to move forward is to loosen the vice-like grip these fears have on your life, your soul, your mind, and your body. Only then can you find the courage and energy to begin to change your career, and change your life.Do any of these blocks and fears resonate with you?One way to loosen the grip these fears have on you is to reframe the way you look at the blocks that keep you stuck. Hereâs how:TimeEvery minute you DONâT make the changes you long for, is a minute you spend holding yourself back from the growth and expansion that you know â" deep down â" that you need and want. And after revising your career to something that aligns with you more closely, youâll find that you will use to the fullest each and every heartfelt talent and skill that you worked so hard to develop in the past.EgoOuter achievements are â" in the end - meaningless if they donât resonate with your heart and soul, if you donât feel good, right, and happy in achieving them. Donât let your ego lead you around by the nose. If it does, youâll find that your hard-won recognition and achievement will leave you feeling empty, sad and lost.ConfusionYes, itâs hard to sort out the âsounds great!â career change ideas from those that will really make you happy. Itâs hard, but not impossible. Find some great coaching and mentoring help and supportive information and resources to help you to do it. Itâs time to get âun-confused.âMoneyWe all want and need money. The question is â" how much do you truly need to make to be happy, fulfilled, and enjoy your life? And what is your relationship with money â" is it healthy and balanced, or are you a slav e to it, addicted to having âthingsâ surround you because, in fact, you feel depleted and joyless? (Read The Energy of Money by Maria Nemeth to help you re-balance your relationship with money.)The packThe pack mentality is a fear-based, group-think that doesnât support innovation, individuality, and risk. So which type of person do you want to be â" a pack follower, or a cutting-edge thinker and leader, who takes the reins of your own life and destiny? The unknownHereâs a fascinating truth â" itâs actually ALL unknown. When we think weâve got all it figured out, and that what we carved out for ourselves is going to be constant and unchanging, we usually suffer. Life is change. The universe will deliver to you continual opportunities for you to experience full-on your own adaptability and resilience. So, what would you rather do â" embrace your resilience and proactively find a new path now that brings you joy, or do nothing, and let life foist unwanted change on you?I f you truly want a career change, I hope youâll begin on a path today to making it happen. Empowering help is all around you. What are the biggest blocks and fears that hold you back from taking empowered action to shift your career to something youâll love and feel proud of?For hands-on help to transform your career, join Kathy Caprinoâs Amazing Career Project 16-week online course, and download her free webinar âThe Quickest Path To Your Happiest Career.âThis article first appeared on Thrive Global.
